Bulimia is an eating disorder that a great amount of people are taking part in. People who are bulimic go on purging episodes where they eat large quantities of food in a short period of time. Then they will use behaviors such as taking laxatives or vomiting. This is due to the fact that they feel overwhelmed in handling with emotions, or in order to punish themselves for something they feel they should unrealistically blame themselves for. This can be caused because the way people feel about themselves, or how they feel over an event or series of events in their lives. People who are bulimic put themselves through all of this to avoid and let out anger, depression, stress or anxiety.
Some signs of bulimia include:
- episodes of rapid food consumption followed by guilt and purging
- feeling of lacking control over eating behaviors
- regularly engaging in diet plans and exercise
I think media plays a huge role in this eating disorder. People are constantly being pressured to be "skinny" and look like all the celebrities. There is no escaping media. Billboards, radio, television, and magazines are in our every day life and they always portray the "ideal" look. People feel the need to look this way and that is a cause of why many people become bulimic. It's an unhealthy habit and something needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteMedia definitely plays a huge role in eating disorders. I think people are trying to change things with creating shows like The Biggest Loser and making "bigger" celebrities show the public their acceptance of their weight. However there is still a long way to go until people realize of big of a problem the media really is on the issue.
ReplyDeleteI think that media does play a role in eating disorders. People see the ideal body all round; such as on posters, magazines, billboards and tv. People then feel the need to look like them so they decide to do it the unhealthy way, which is becoming bulimic.
ReplyDeletei think that anorexia is a major problem and alot of it has to do with the media. The media shows mostly skinny girls and when people are even slightly overweight they criticize them which isnt right.
ReplyDeleteI think that media has alot to do with girls and eating disorders in general. There's so much pressure on girls to look and be a certian way, and it drives girls to do anything to look good. Unfortunately a lot of times, that means resorting to things like anorexia, and bulimia to lose weight.
ReplyDeleteMedia does play a huge role on young teenage girls. Many of the teens see the pretty, young and skinny celebrities, and want to look like them. I feel that there is a need for average sized celebrities in our world. Many of the celebrities are way to skinny, and don't look healthy.
ReplyDeleteI Think the media plays a major role on how young women try to look. There are so many things out there that promote the "ideal" image for you.
ReplyDeleteI think that people do this ti become the ideal model. What they see in the magazines. Some women who are ten pounds overweight think they are fat and will do this to try and get to their ideal image. It is extremely not healthy and women need to start appreciating thier body types.
